You are struggling with chronic stress because you do really care about your future and the results of your hard work. Life revolves around variables. 

Most people do not aware that chronic stress potentially leads to belly fat. It’s a commonplace thing that a post-traumatic event, like the loss of a loved one, or financial crisis may lead to grey hair and weight change. Every individual deal with their stress differently. Some lose their appetite and skip meals. And some crave more for unhealthy food, especially junk food, or go for binge eating as they feel stressed out.

Stress and Fat Storage 

Chronic stress results in changes in metabolism, insulin, and fat storage. As we feel stressful, our body releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.  Cortisol temporarily suppresses functions such as our digestive, immune, and reproductive responses. If you have more cortisol in your body, you may crave unhealthy food like sweets or high-fat, high-calorie meals. 

 

Researchers from Ohio State University found higher levels of insulin contribute to fat storage. They also found that more stressful individuals have less fat oxidation. Fat oxidation refers to the conversion of large fat molecules into smaller molecules that can be used as fuel. In a sense, without sufficient fat oxidation, fat will not be burned but stored in the body. 

 

Cortisol Affects Fat Distribution and Fat Accumulation

Studies found that excessive stress affects where our body stores fat. Higher levels of stress link to greater levels of abdominal fat, which is particularly tough to shed. Also, abdominal fat is also linked to greater health risks.  Cortisol affects fat distribution by causing fat to be stored centrally around the organs. Cortisol proved to be the key factor to increase visceral fat and abdominal fat accumulation. If your weight gain is caused by high levels of stress, your body fat will not be stored all over the body,  because cortisol promotes fat storage in the belly. 

 

 

Cortisol and Digestive Problems

Excessive levels of cortisol impact many of the body’s systems and have a significant negative effect on the digestive system. During the stress response, cortisol aids in moving blood flow towards the brain, large muscles, and limbs. 

 

Cortisol and Immune system

Cortisol is anti-inflammatory, which contains the immune response. However, chronically elevated cortisol makes the immune system “resistant” that an accumulation of stress hormones and increased production of inflammatory cytokines will surprisingly compromise the immune response.

Chronic Stress Affects Metabolism Speed
Researchers from Ohio State University found that stress links to a slower metabolism in women. Researchers measured the respondents’ metabolic rate and examined their blood sugar, triglycerides, insulin, and cortisol levels. They found that women who reported one or more stressor during the previous 24 hours burned 104 fewer calories than the non-stressed women, which might potentially lead to a weight gain of almost 11 pounds within a year.

 

Cortisol and Junk Foods
Cortisol rises during tension-filled times such as before a job interview. People who suffer from chronic stress are more likely to turn overeating or binge eating into a habit. Increased levels of the hormone can potentially cause higher insulin levels. As our blood sugar drops and we crave sugary fatty foods.  

 

Walking and running, which works better for weight loss? I would say, muscle-building. To ensure muscle-building, you’d better not burn the midnight oil and limit sugar intake for sure.  If you aim to lose weight or fight obesity, muscle-building helps you to burn calories more effectively.  Studies found that low body temperature is the happy home for viruses. As we increase our body temperature, our immunity goes up so do our moods. Regular jogging, brisk walks or other forms of aerobic exercise do help us sweat and keep us healthy, physically and mentally.

Life can be beautiful without perfection. There’s a strong link between unconditional love and posttraumatic growth. In truth, people only witness unconditional love during hard times. Unconditional love is found in imperfections. Imperfections teach us to be humble and compassionate. If you believe in miracles, be aware of the seven deadly sins and the power of tenderness. Earn approval and luck from God. According to the Bible, no one will be exempt from life challenges, including the chosen ones (1 Peter 1:3-9). God expects us to stay hopeful and “rejoice in our sufferings,” for “trials of various kinds” are training to make us “perfect and complete” (Romans 5:3-6, James 1:1-27). It’s comforting to know that “God promises to make something good out of the storm” (Roman 8: 28). We fall and we grow. There's a strong connection between unhealed trauma and dysfunctional immune system. If you rush yourself to become a better me, that might be a sign of unhealed trauma. As we learn to humble ourselves, life gets better. The connection between the brain and stomach is bidirectional. Negative emotions and chronic stress sabotage people's immune system. 70% to 80% of our immunity hinges on our gut health. Memory loss and cognitive impairment are common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, all of which are highly connected to type 2 diabetes. Early signs of type 2 diabetes include chronic fatigue, irritability, frequent urination, vision problems and slow wound healing. Depression is prevalent in people with diabetes due to the fact that diabetes causes “structural changes in the brain.” Muscle-building helps regulate blood sugar levels. There is growing evidence that high blood sugar leads to reduced muscle mass. Beyond that, there’s a strong link between sleep deprivation and emotional weakness. People suffer from suppressed anger and pessimism. God is watching our every move. God sees through our motives. Mental health crisis is sweeping on a global scale because the core value of capitalism is incompatible with what human truly needs. Money cannot purchase inner peace. Wealth incurs fair-weather friends, frenemies and snobs. I would say, inner peace is the utmost blessing from God.
