Victor Hugo >Inspirational Famous Quotes

“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner who breaks parole, and the police inspector, Javert, who tries hard to hunt down law-breakers.

Is Jean Valjean a real person? Is Les Miserables based on a true story?  The leading character Jean Valjean is thought to be inspired by a true story of Eugène-François Vidocq,  a reformed ex-convict who transformed his criminal career into becoming the first director of French Surete Nationale crime agency.  In Les Misérables, Hugo split him into two characters, Valjean and Javert, at odds with each other.  Les Miserables tells the fictional story of Jean Valjean,  who was unjustly prisoned to nearly two decades for stealing a loaf of bread to save a starving child.

▲Les Mis “Do You Hear The People Sing”

<lyrics>

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live

Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes

What does Les Miserables mean? “Les miserables” are  french, which literally means  “the miserable ones.” The story was set in the early 1800s. The main character is an ex-convict who is struggling his whole life.

The story takes place in 19th-century France. Jean Valjean eventually becomes the mayor of a town in France and the owner of a factory in town. He is dread of being captured again by police inspector Javert, and that’s why he always keeps alert. One of his factory workers, Fantine was abandoned by her lover Tholomyès that she has to raise her daughter alone. She blames Jean Valjean for her tragic life of becoming a prostitute. He feels responsible for her death and agrees to take care of her illegitimate daughter, Cosette. Fantine was forced to leave her three-year-old daughter Cosette with the Thénardiers at their inn in Montfermeil, paying them to care for her child while she works in the city of Montreuil-sur-Mer. However, she didn’t know that Thénardiers abuse her daughter.

Valjean was a middle-aged man and Fantine was a young girl. Fantine was fired from Valjean’s factory, not by Valjean, but by his foreman. She needed to provide for her self and her daughter. She resorted to selling her possessions, her hair, her teeth, and eventually her body by being a prostitute for the sake of survival. It’s the exemplary tragedy of poverty. In the story, most people are starving and struggling to live.

Jean Valjean was sent to jail for years just because he stole a loaf of bread to save his sister’s son and in total, he served 19 years in prison due to multiple escapes. The social injustice is assured.

How does Les Miserables end? The fate of the leading character Jean Valjean in Tim Hooper’s 2012 film adaptation is quite different from the original novel. Valjean dies in the end. He dies as a nobleman and he’s reunited with God.  What does Valjean die of? It seems like the main cause of his death was heart failure. He lost the will to live. That’s the worst part. Remember, apathy is one of the 7 deadly sins. We should never give up hope for a better future.  Life troubles are just life challenges or God’s discipline. Considering his age, Jean Valjean is too young to die of illness. Scientific researches have proved that sorrow and depression can be truly harmful to our soul and body.

The story reveals the harsh life of the poor, the weak and the disadvantaged. Fantine is dismissed from her factory for bearing a child (Cosette) out of wedlock. Ultimately, Fantine becomes a prostitute for the sake of survival.

“Love is like a tree: it grows by itself, roots itself deeply in our being and continues to flourish over a heart in ruin. The inexplicable fact is that the blinder it is, the more tenacious it is. It is never stronger than when it is completely unreasonable.”― Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

“It is nothing to die. It is frightful not to live.”― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

lyrics:
Do you here the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men.
It is the music of a people
who will not be slaves again.
When the beating of you heart
echos the beating of the drums,
there is a life about to start
when tomorrow comes.
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barracade
is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
that will give you the right to be free!
Do you here the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men.
It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again.
When the beating of your heart

Life can be beautiful without perfection. There’s a strong link between unconditional love and posttraumatic growth. In truth, people can only witness unconditional love in hard times. If you believe in luck or miracles, be aware of the seven deadly sins and the power of tenderness. According to the Bible, no one will be exempt from life challenges, including the chosen ones (1 Peter 1:3-9). God expects us to stay hopeful and “rejoice in our sufferings,” because “trials of various kinds” are training to make us “perfect and complete” (Romans 5:3-6, James 1:1-27). It’s comforting to know that “God promises to make something good out of the storm” (Roman 8: 28). We fall and we learn. As we learn to humble ourselves, life gets better. The connection between the brain and stomach is bidirectional. Excessive sugar intake and chronic stress sabotage our immune system that 70% to 80% of our immunity hinges on our gut health. Memory loss and cognitive impairment are common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, all of which are highly connected to type 2 diabetes. Early signs of type 2 diabetes include chronic fatigue, irritability, frequent urination, vision problems and slow wound healing. Depression is prevalent in people with diabetes due to the fact that diabetes causes “structural changes in the brain.” Muscle-building helps regulate blood sugar levels. There is growing evidence that high blood sugar leads to reduced muscle mass. Beyond that, there’s a strong link between sleep deprivation and emotional weakness People suffer from suppressed anger. God is watching our every move. God sees through our motives. Mental health crisis is sweeping on a global scale because the core value of capitalism is incompatible with what human truly needs. Money cannot purchase inner peace. Wealth incurs fair-weather friends, frenemies and snobs. Inner peace is the utmost blessing from God. Take time to deal with your old mental wounds. Gmail: jpsiawase@gmail.com
