The direct link between added sugar and inflammation in the body

Several studies have shown that a diet high in added sugar leads to insulin resistance, increased levels of uric acid and inflammation in the body. In a nutshell, sugary diet spike inflammation levels and uric acid levels.[1]Significantly, this effect can last for a considerable amount of time.

A study of 29 healthy people found that the consumption of only 40 grams of added sugar from just one 375-ml can of soda per day led to an increase in inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, LDL cholesterol and added weight.  

Consuming a 50-gram dose of fructose causes a spike in inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) just 30 minutes later. Furthermore, CRP remains high for over two hours.

Excessive White Bread Can Be Harmful.

In addition to added sugar, eating too many refined carbohydrates has also been linked to increased inflammation. Researchers found that eating just 50 grams of refined carbs in the form of white bread resulted in higher blood sugar levels and an increase in the inflammatory marker Nf-kB.

Excess production of AGEs

As protein or fat combine with sugar in the bloodstream, harmful compounds advanced glycation end products (AGEs) occurs. Too many AGEs leads to oxidative stress and inflammation.

Increased gut permeability

As bacteria, toxins and undigested food particles move into the bloodstream, it potentially results in inflammation in the body.

Not only sugar, Other factors like stress, smoking, sleep deprivation, excess fat intake can also cause inflammation in the body. In the long-term, inflammation caused by sugar may damage DNA and body cells.

High added sugar diet has a direct link with AGE production, gut permeability, LDL cholesterol, inflammatory markers chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, obesity, etc. Several studies show people with high sugar intakes may be at a greater risk of developing cancer.

[1] Another study in overweight and obese people found that the consumption of one can of regular sugary drink for six months led to increased levels of uric acid, in which is a trigger for inflammation and insulin resistance.


Reference: One study examined the diets of over 35,000 women and found that those who consumed more sugary foods and drinks had double the risk of developing colon cancer, compared to those who consumed a diet with the least added sugar.
