Order Food in English -Menu Vocabulary

An hors d’oeuvre originates from  French= appetizer

Generally, appetizers are finger food. The first course is named starters, appetizers or hors d’oeuvres. Next is the main course, namely entrée. Many restaurants offer vegetarian entrées as well.

 

Dessert menu
Desserts can be gelato or pancakes, fruit pies, or a cheese platter, crackers, dried fruits, nuts, etc.In high-end restaurants, wine stewards or sommeliers helps guests pair wines from the wine list with the food they order.

 

Traditionally, red wines are paired with steak, roast beef and duck, while white wines are paired with chicken, fish and seafood. Be aware of the fact that many wine lists don’t reveal the prices when you order. Make sure you have enough budget for that.

Hors d’oeuvres may be served in either hot or cold. Typically, an hors d’oeuvre is often designed to be eaten by hand.

Tipping Etiquette

In many countries, a service charges around 10% to 20% of the bill. In North America and some Eastern European countries, they don’t charge service fees. It depends on the restaurant. In Taiwan. some restaurants charge the service fee and some don’t.

 

sparkling wine (in Chinese: 氣泡酒) 

Any of various wines, such as champagne, produced by a process involving fermentation in the bottle. Sparkling wine is naturally carbonated by a second fermentation. Sparkling wine with lots of carbon dioxide and its quality depends on its carbon dioxide content.

 

The biggest difference between sparkling wines hinge on sugar content and sugar levels vary dramatically. Sugar levels can be up to 15 grams per liter for brut to 50-plus grams for doux. Next, sparkling wines with higher alcohol content are less healthy.  However, sparkling wines with lower alcohol content often contain more sugar. A shorter fermentation process eliminates less sugar in the process.

White bread is made from wheat which removes germ and bran  thereby losing  the nutrients of  fibre, B group vitamins, vitamin E and minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium and phosphorus. Wholegrain bread, wholemeal bread and multigrain bread are better than white bread, because they have more fiber, vitamins and minerals. Often, multigrain bread is made from white flour with some added grains.

 

Wholemeal bread is mad e from wholegrains that have been milled to a fine texture.Wholemeal flour contains more fibre, vitamins and minerals than white bread.

Wholegrain bread has a lower GI (glycaemic index) than white and wholemeal breads. Foods with a high GI index potentially cause blood sugar spikes. Conversely, lower GI diet helps regulate blood glucose levels. Wholegrains contains the entire grain: the bran (outer layer), endosperm (starchy middle layer) and germ (nutrient rich inner part).
