How do Jews respond to evil & suffering?
How do Jews respond to the suffering and wickedness of the world? Jews fully believe that whatever happens on Earth is according to God’s plan and God’s plan is always the best even though the process can be painful and hard.
Jews believe suffering brings people closer to God. In times of trouble, many people find comfort and support through their faith in God. Also, Jews believe suffering helps people to empathize with others’ suffering.
The Tenakh teaches that suffering can be a punishment for sins. Or alternatively, suffering can be part of a test from God of a person’s faith and to see if he/she will abide by God’s commandments in any circumstance. Those who remain faithful and pass the test will be rewarded in this life or after death.
