Molise is an underpopulated region in Italy. The local government is willing to pay people $27,500 a month for three years to live in one of its villages and make it a more prosperous place to live, to repopulate Italy’s dwindling rural communities.
There are conditions to be met. To secure the incentive, the newcomer is required to move to a town in the province of fewer than 2,000 residents and pledge to open a business there. Each of the underpopulated communes will receive $11,000 to build infrastructure and promote cultural activities.
More than 9,000 people, roughly about 3% of the population have left the mountainous province since 2014. Owing to the effects of emigration, many towns and villages in Italy have adopted a scheme of selling homes for $1.
Molise is just one of many parts of Italy suffering from depopulation. According to reports, a decrease in births and an increase in the migration of young generation moving to other European countries in search of better job opportunities are the main causes of depopulation in Italy. Nearly 157,000 people left the country in 2018.
The president of Molise, Donato Toma asserts that”We wanted to do more; we wanted people to invest here. They can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant, anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the population …. It’s not just a matter of increasing the population. People also need infrastructure and a reason to stay, otherwise we’ll end up back where we started in a few years.” Likewise, the town of Locana has offered to pay people $10,000 to move there, as long as they have a family.
As to the crime rate and sexual violence in Italy, Italy has a lower per capita rate of rape. According to Police authorities data, the rate of sexual assaults per 100,000 inhabitants is significantly higher in the Northern region than in the Southern ones. (Reference.)
