Wuhan Coronavirus Outbreak: Comparing SARS & 2019-nCov
# Lesson from SARS-CoV
On May 12, 2003, due to excessive admission of SARS patients and nosocomial infections in the emergency room of National Taiwan University Hospital, the hospital was forced to shut down for a week.
According to Dr. Huang Limin of National Taiwan University Hospital, virus testing found that SARS virus was present in the emergency room. Door handles, toilets, and water dispensers are rife with SARS viruses. He emphasized that most viruses were found in the medical staff’s lounge.
SARS spread rapidly around the world after a case coming out of Guangdong in November 2002, and the outbreak was under control the following July.
Huang Limin, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the National Taiwan University Hospital, claims that the new type of coronavirus has a lower fatality rate than SARS. Buy, gene sequence shows that it has undergone several mutations and toxicity adjustments, which makes the new type of coronavirus earns a better chance of surviving in human’s body than SARS and it has a great chance to develop into an emerging infectious disease.
Huang Limin, director of the Taiwan Infectious Diseases Medical Association of the SARS virus strain, pointing out “SARS was not very” smart ” It was too toxic. It killed the master and died itself. It will not be infected after 2 days of fever, and the infection efficiency is not very high …. but 2019-nCoV is not that toxic, but it has a better chance of surviving in human’s body. “
Dr. Limin Huang mentioned that the fatality rate of SARS is roughly 10%, and the fatality rate of new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is currently estimated to be about 4% to 6%. The fatality rate is lower than SARS, but the transmission rate is faster. He further adds that “this virus has survived in the wild for at least several months, constantly mutating, parasitizing to intermediate masters, and then transmitting it to humans. The symptoms of 2019-nCoV is mild in the beginning phrase, which makes it uneasy to be noticed.
#Establish emergency room cleaning SOP
1． Disinfect and clean multiple times a day.
Huang Jingtai, Chief Physician at Changkou Infectious Medicine Department of Linkou, pointed out that virus-contaminated non-living objects, such as sphygmomanometers, curtains, towels, are the key things causing hospital infections.
2． Before contacting patients, the doctors must wear N95 masks, glass goggles, and isolation gowns.
3． Move the fever screening station outdoors so as to prevent suspected cases from contacting with other patients.
4． Establish a separate line to prevent suspected cases from approaching the emergency room with patients with a low autoimmune system. Send the suspected cases to have X-rays inspection and send them to the negative pressure isolation ward.
