THE COST OF CHANGING URLs: BROKEN LINKS, 404 ERRORS AND LOSS OF SEO RANKING AND TRAFFIC
1. Change URLs can be titled as one of the easiest ways to hurt the performance of a website. The cost of changing URLs is high. The site would potentially lose SEO Ranking. Significantly, the broken links will affect referring traffic and the credibility of your site. Further, it will likely cause a temporary drop in traffic while Google indexes the changes, coupled with the loss of referring site traffic.
2. To be more precisely, any changes such as capitalization, added hyphen, added an underscore, modification of domain, will probably result in the consequence that website visitors will receive 404 errors and Google won’t be able to index your site. This is called nonexistent traffic.
The fact is: When any URL is changed, the organic search performance would be altered. That’s terrifying and I didn’t know it and I was the one who repeatedly changeed the URLs of my article within the WordPress system, considering it as a better modification.
