Coronavirus Epidemic Update: Antiviral Drugs for nCoV: (Remdesivir)
In medical research labs around the world, scientists and a dozen bio-pharmaceutical firms are racing to develop a effective vaccine for a new type of coronavirus. One scientist at the Imperial College in London, UK, announced on February 5 that his team could move towards trials on animals as early as next week and then onto humans within a matter of months. Scientists in China alleged they had cracked the virus’s genetic sequence and sharing it publicly online on January 10, which help virologists and immunologists to work on a vaccine ASAP.
Researchers Race to Develop Coronavirus Vaccine
The most effective drug at this stage is “Redesivir,” which proved to inhibit the infection of new coronavirus! Scientists in China have started clinical trials at Vulcan Hill Hospital. The drug “Remdesivir” is developed by Gilead Science of the United States.
Remdesivir was originally designed to prevent the epidemic of the West African Ebola virus in 2013. But it was suspended due to poor clinical trial results. 7 years later, Remdesivir proved to be effective in fighting against coronavirus. A case report from the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) pointed out that the first case in the United States to be diagnosed with Wuhan pneumonia had recovered after receiving the treatment of Radixvir.
Serving as Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing, Gilead developed the world’s first HIV single tablet regimen and advanced more than 25 compounds from early-stage development to market. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from National Taiwan University and her secured her PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Southern California.
